DFID is the UK Government's Department For International Development, which, until 1997, was known as the Overseas Development Administration (ODA). DFID implements the UK's international development policy, including providing funds for a variety of programmes, projects and other activities which aim to tackle poverty. As a UK-based development agency, Homeless International feels it is important to work with DFID and to suggest ways in which DFID can better achieve its development objectives.
Homeless International has worked with DFID (and ODA) since we began our work in 1989. As well as applying for funding for projects developed with our international partners (see our partners section of the website), and establishing the Community Led Infrastructure Finance Facility (CLIFF) which DFID supports, we continually aim to influence DFID's policy and practice so that it better deals with issues such as housing, infrastructure, slum upgrading, urban poverty and urbanisation (to name but a few!). We do this by:
- Participating in meetings and events.
- Putting forward written submissions during policy consultations
- Preparing briefing papers about major issues
- Engaging with DFID staff around programmes and strategy
- Showcasing lessons learnt from our work with international partners.
