Fundación Pro-Hábitat, Homeless International's partner in Bolivia until 2006, was formed in 1993 with the aim of "responding to the challenge of promoting community participation and management as an essential strategy in the development of human settlements in Bolivia". The organisation mainly focuses upon combating the fatal Chagas disease, which is spread by Vinchuca beetles that thrive in poor quality housing. The organisation sought to develop a credit programme to provide affordable loans to families seeking to upgrade housing. In our research section you can download a background research study.
In Bolivia, community members in urban and peri-urban areas come together through various community-based organisations and neighbourhood councils. Some groups are recognised as organizaciónes territorial de base and are assigned certain rights and duties via the Bolivian Law of Popular Participation. Fundación Pro-Hábitat works with these groups in order to ensure community participation and management in settlement development and control of the Chagas disease.
