Homeless International is a UK charity that supports community-led housing and infrastructure related development in partnership with local partner organisations in Africa and Asia. The initiatives are all led, developed and managed by the local community groups themselves. Visit our What We Do page to find out more.
Our History
In 1987, activists in the UK created the IYSH Trust - an organisation that was set up to meet a short term need to coordinate UK activities during the United Nations’ International Year of Shelter for the Homeless in that year. By the end of the year, it was clear that a huge job remained to be done. As a result, a decision was made to set up a permanent UK based organisation with the specific remit of supporting community-led shelter and settlement initiatives in the developing world.
Established in 1989, that organisation was named Homeless International. Since that time, our belief has remained consistent and strong: that poor communities have a right to safe and secure housing, and that through working together to express their ideas and needs, they can play a central role in creating equitable cities.
We currently employ 12 permanent UK-based staff, supported by a Council of Management whose expertise spans across housing, finance, and international development.
