Homeless International carries out collaborative research with international partner organisations, with a view to further supporting, investigating and articulating strategies to support pro-poor development. Research enables Homeless International and partners to think ahead, to learn from experiences so far, and to share these lessons more effectively with other agencies concerned with urban development, urban finance, slum upgrading, housing development, infrastructure provision and other issues of concern to poor communities in developing countries.
Research has bought us time and opportunity to articulate the grassroots action that is already taking place, as well as to identify the areas of the process that need further support or investigation – in this way research also helps our advocacy and financial services work. Instead of seeing research in academic terms, where the key output would be a book or a paper, Homeless International judges the success of research by the extent to which it makes a real difference to people's lives.
