Homeless International’s local partner in Pakistan, the Orangi Pilot Project (OPP), is operational in the areas affected by the floods and currently undertaking  assessments to establish the scale of people's needs. Once OPP has a clearer picture of the situation on the ground, they will be able to identify how best to respond to the needs of the flood affected communities. We have supported our partner organisations in the reconstruction of housing, water supplies and other infrastructure following disasters in the past, in Pakistan following the earthquake in 2005 and floods in 2007, in the Philippines following the typhoon in 2008 and in Sri Lanka following the tsunami in 2004. Between 60 and 80 per cent of all illnesses in the project region occur due to inadequate water and sanitation, resulting in conditions such as diarrhoea, dysentry, typhoid and cholera.  With individual household toilets, the lives of the 15,077 families have been drastically improved.  Click here to read more about IVDP and the expanding network of women’s groups benefiting from their work.
